Assessment and treatment of skin and nail conditions of the foot, including dermoscopy to examine skin lesions.

HCPC registered & inspectedSpecialist podiatrists5 stars on Google

The skin and nails of the feet develop their own set of problems, and because the feet are easy to ignore these are often left far longer than a skin change anywhere else on the body. We assess and treat skin and nail conditions of the foot, and we examine anything that needs a closer look rather than leaving you to wonder about it.

Skin and nail conditions we see

  • Fungal skin infections (athlete's foot) and fungal, thickened or discoloured nails
  • Corns, callus and cracked, dry heels
  • Verrucae (plantar warts)
  • Eczema and psoriasis affecting the feet
  • Blisters, sweating and odour problems
  • Moles, lumps and other skin lesions on the foot or around the nails

Dermoscopy for skin lesions

When there is a mole or skin lesion to assess, we use dermoscopy, examining it under a lit, magnified view that reveals detail the naked eye cannot see. This helps identify the features of specific skin lesions, such as melanoma, seborrhoeic keratosis, verrucae, squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma. Most lesions on the foot are harmless, but where one has features that need further attention, we refer you promptly to the right specialist.

When to get a skin change checked

It is worth having a skin change on the foot looked at when it is new, growing or changing shape or colour, when it bleeds, itches or does not heal, or when there is a dark line or mark under a toenail. These signs usually turn out to be nothing serious, but they are exactly the ones a professional should assess rather than you watching and waiting.

How we help

We treat the common skin and nail conditions directly, as part of our wider general chiropody and verruca treatment care, and we give clear advice on keeping the problem from returning. For any lesion that needs it, our role is to examine it properly and make sure it reaches the right person quickly.

Frequently asked questions.

What is podiatric dermatology?

Podiatric dermatology is the assessment and treatment of skin and nail conditions that affect the feet. It runs from everyday problems like dry skin, callus, corns and fungal infections through to moles and other skin lesions that need a closer look.

What is dermoscopy?

Dermoscopy is the examination of a skin lesion with a specialist device that lights and magnifies it. It shows detail that is not visible to the naked eye, which helps the clinician judge whether a lesion is harmless or needs onward referral.

Should I get a mole or skin change on my foot checked?

Yes. Any new, changing, bleeding or unusual mark on the foot, or a dark streak under a nail, is worth having assessed. Most are harmless, but some skin cancers can appear on the foot, so it is sensible to have a professional look rather than wait.
