A fracture in the foot or ankle is not always obvious. Stress fractures in particular build up over time and are often mistaken for a soft-tissue injury, so they are missed and keep hurting. We assess foot and ankle pain properly, identify a fracture where there is one, and manage the recovery.
How we assess
We take a history and examine the foot, use diagnostic ultrasound where it helps, and arrange x-ray, MRI or 3D imaging when bone imaging is needed to confirm a fracture or rule one out. Getting the diagnosis right is what stops a fracture being treated as a strain for months.
How we manage fractures
For stress fractures and stable injuries, management usually involves protecting the foot, adjusting your activity and footwear, and a staged return to normal loading, with clear timescales so you can plan. We also look at why a stress fracture happened, since the way the foot loads often plays a part, and address that so it does not recur.
When it needs more
A displaced or unstable fracture, or one that needs an operation, is referred promptly to the right specialist or hospital service. Where surgery is the right step, it is carried out by surgical colleagues who have worked with the practice for decades. Serious acute injuries should go straight to A and E.

Frequently asked questions.
How do I know if my foot is fractured or just sprained?
You cannot always tell from how it feels, especially with a stress fracture. A proper assessment, with imaging where needed, is the only reliable way to know, which is why persistent pain is worth having checked.
Do you take x-rays at the clinic?
We use diagnostic ultrasound in clinic and arrange x-ray, MRI or 3D imaging when bone imaging is needed. We are clear about what each one shows and why we are arranging it.
