Diabetes can reduce circulation and sensation in the feet, which means a small wound can go unnoticed and become a serious problem. Prompt, careful wound care matters, and it is one of the most important things a podiatrist does for patients with diabetes.
What we do
- Assess the wound, the circulation and the sensation in the foot
- Clean and, where appropriate, debride the wound to help it heal
- Offload pressure from the area so it is not repeatedly re-injured
- Dress the wound and set a schedule of regular checks
- Advise on footwear and daily care to reduce the risk of it returning
Why early care matters
In a foot with reduced sensation, a wound may not hurt, so it is easy to miss until it has advanced. Regular checks catch problems early, when they are far easier to manage. Where a wound is serious or not responding, we act quickly and involve the wider medical team so nothing is left to worsen.
Working with your wider care
Diabetic foot care works best as part of your overall management. We keep your GP or diabetes team informed where that helps, and we escalate promptly to specialist or hospital care when a wound needs it. Routine diabetic foot health is covered on our general chiropody service.

Frequently asked questions.
When should I see a podiatrist about a diabetic foot wound?
As soon as you notice any break in the skin, redness, swelling, discharge or a change in colour. With diabetes it is always better to have it checked early than to wait.
Do you work with my GP or diabetes team?
Yes, where it helps your care we keep them informed, and we refer promptly to specialist or hospital services when a wound needs more than podiatry can provide.
